Dear Momentum Family—
I just spent three days without phones or computers in a conference with 154 Jewish leaders from five continents to help The Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) brainstorm in a reinvention lab for greater impact and reach in the coming years.
The reason they asked us to disconnect was so that we could be completely present and focused.
At the end of the conference, which was both fascinating and inspiring, the head of the Jewish Agency, Isaac Herzog (known as “Bougie”), stood up and mentioned the holiday of Shavuot which begins this Saturday night. Shavuot marks the greatest day in our history when the Jewish people stood together as the receivers, guardians, and teachers of the Torah and its values and teachings that would change all of humanity. We are all the descendants of a people who still hold that responsibility.
He also said, as someone who is addicted to his phones, that the Jewish people and Shabbat can also teach the world about healthy disconnection!
My husband and I are in New Jersey with most of our kids and 600 people for a Shabbat and Shavuot retreat. It will be yet another three days of “disconnecting to connect”— Hard? No. A challenge? Sometimes. Certainly gaining regular focused family time and spiritual refreshment is a gift I feel blessed to open on a regular basis.
Good Shabbos, Shabbat Shalom, and Chag Sameach!
